Cambridge Hyatt at the Chesapeake Bay

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

Historic mansions, stately buildings and gracious country estates aren’t the only wedding venues in the Washington, DC area. We’ve got some of the most gorgeous waterfront around, too – Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay isn’t just your average hotel – it’s also a golf resort, spa, and marina. Right on the Chesapeake Bay, the Hyatt in Cambridge, Maryland is great place for a destination wedding that is just outside DC’s back door.

When Chris Laich Music Service was there a little while ago for an event, we snapped a few shots of our wireless Bose speakers set up for our client’s cocktail hour and reception. As usual, we were careful to keep everything as unobtrusive as possible without compromising sound coverage or clarity, and as you can see our equipment blends right in!

Of course our images aren’t nearly as good as the ones Greg Gibson took – check back this Thursday to see them!

River Farm Set Up

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

A beautiful venue in Alexandria, Virginia for a wedding, River Farm has amazing history – even before it became one of George Washington’s five farms in the area.

River Farm is an elegant manor style home surrounded by beautiful lawns and gardens, in addition to having handsome, intimate indoor spaces, including a ballroom, for weddings. Just outside River Farm’s ballroom is a lovely patio that can be tented to extend the space available for dinner, and its gardens are perfect for an outdoor ceremony and cocktails.

Setting up our modern equipment and delivering perfect sound from ceremony through reception without disturbing the aesthetic at River Farm is nothing short of challenging and accomplished by very few DJs; but one Chris Laich Music Services is well prepared for! We were at River Farm recently for a wedding and took a few moments to snap some pictures of our Bose wireless speakers and equipment before the ceremony and celebration got into full swing.

How Do I Choose My Wedding Day Music with Chris Laich Music Services?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Your wedding day is just that – all yours! At Chris Laich Music Services, we are committed to always keeping that in mind.

Each playlist for every wedding we do is custom-tailored for the couple and their one of a kind wedding day. If you had a request that is not in our 80,000 song repertoire, we will download as much as needed from iTunes before the event.

Music selection always starts with the bride and groom, and our process is geared toward making sure the music on their wedding day is exactly what they envision it to be. Whether they have a large list of must-plays or a large list of do-not-plays, or whatever; we will completely honor their lists.

We supply our clients with a song list that covers only about 400 songs, asking them to highlight what they’d like to be played, and encouraging them to write any additional songs they would like to hear.

Our cocktail/dinner playlists often include Frank, Tony, Dean, and Bobby, as well as Dinah, Etta, Ella, Billie, and Nina. Then there’s Van Morrison, Nat, Marvin, Ray, and James Taylor. Some newer music is also worked in, with tracks from artists like Ben Harper, David Gray, Sting, Dave Matthews, Regina Spektor, Coldplay, U2, Harry Connick, Michael Buble, and Eva Cassidy; but will certainly cater to your likes and dislikes.

Jeff & Patti at the Metropolitan Club

By getting to know our clients and their style, when their wedding day arrives, our brides and grooms trust us to pull songs from their list, read the crowd, and play songs in an appropriate order from cocktails to dinner and dancing. With their feedback, we put together a perfect mix of new and old, a blend of eclectic yet recognizable, romantic, distinctive sounds that will always catch their guests’ ears!

Any vendor who is on site working at a wedding will tell you that one of the many exciting moments during the event is seeing the bride in her gown! Even after all these years of deejaying weddings and events in the DC area, it’s something I always look forward to.

Once something unusual, we’ve been spotting more brides changing into another dress for her reception. We’re all for a wardrobe change, especially when the intention is usually dance floor comfort!

Planning Your Father Daughter Dance

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Image by Redegti's Photography via Style Me Pretty

There are few more emotional moments in the relationship of a father and daughter than the father-daughter dance.

By nature, the father-daughter dance can be little bit sentimental, but it’s meaning and poignancy are something almost everyone can relate to.  There often isn’t a dry eye in the house!  Since the dance is so personal, you don’t have to choose the same song that your guests have heard at every wedding.

Here are a few traditional and non-traditional father-daughter dance songs from some different genres.   Remember, regardless of the song length, we can certainly fade it out smoothly at any point in the song to create a seamless conclusion to the dance.

“Sunshine of my life” (Stevie Wonder)

“Daddy’s Little Girl” (Michael Buble, Al Martino)

“Daughters” (John Mayer)

“Father and Daughter” (Paul Simon)

“Have I Told You Lately” (Van Morrison)

“I Loved Her First” (Heartland)

“Isn’t She Lovely” (Stevie Wonder)

“Kind and Generous” (Natalie Merchant)

“My Girl” (The Temptations)

I Wanna Grow Old With You

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Robbie’s (Adam Sandler) crowning moment in the movie “The Wedding Singer” is when he hops on a plan to chase after Julia (played by Drew Barrymore).

Seated in first class with none other than Billy Idol,  Robbie quickly gains the support of everyone around him after they discover why he’s on the plane.  Moments later, after finding out Julia is aboard, he whips up one sweet proposal song, perfect for a quirky first dance or for your reception playlist, ”I Wanna Grow Old With You”.

With the help of the first class guests and crew, he serenades Julia and, of course, everyone lives happily ever after.

On the Dancefloor: Romance

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Everyone’s first dance is different, but one thing they all have in common is that it is a moment for you and your new partner to savor.  Whether you choreograph a dance, do what comes naturally, or stand swaying in the middle of the dance floor, enjoy it!

{Real Wedding} Jeff & Patti, The Metropolitan Club

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Welcome to Jeff and Patti, married October 17th at The Metropolitan Club!

Patti & Jeff

CL: What made you choose The Metropolitan Club for your wedding? Was the ceremony held there?

J&P: We loved the space.  It was classy, elegant and unique.  We liked the “old world” feel of it.   I also liked the many rooms and spaciousness. Lastly, as a private members club usually only open during the work week, the place was reserved entirely for us that day.  That was very appealing vs. a public space like a hotel. The ceremony was held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Downtown DC near Union Station.

CL: It is a wonderful space, and very special!

Jeff & Patti

CL: Share some of your favorite details about your wedding day.

J&P: Everything was beautifully done from the flowers to the food to the wonderful words spoken by our best man, matron and honor and my father and mother.   And after dinner, when the dancing started, Jeff and I barely left the dance floor. The energy and vibe of the party was simply infectious.  Everyone had an amazing time.

CL: How did you choose your first dance song?

J&P: Keith Urban – Memories of Us.    I saw the video and the words really struck me as perfect for our song.  And Jeff really loves country music, which I’ve only started to warm up to, so I thought it was most appropriate.  He agreed.

Jeff & Patti

CL: Did you take dance lessons for your first dance?

J&P: We did try one 1 1/2 hour session.  But, if felt too stiff and choreographed. Jeff convinced me to just let us dance naturally with no formal steps in mind.   That way, we wouldn’t be distracted with trying to keep up to some choreographed dance. I must say he did a great job leading the dance and adding his own flair to it.

CL: You guys looked like you had fun, and moved like pros!

Jeff & Patti

CL: Did you dance all night? What was one of the best moments you remember on the dance floor?

J&P:  We definitely danced all night.  We barely left the floor.  One of the best moments was when Chris played Piano Man, a special request that Jeff made.  It’s a tradition for his fraternity brothers to serenade the bride and groom.  They all made a circle around us and then many of our guests joined in and the circle was around the edges of the dance floor with everyone singing together.   It was so much fun.

CL:  What a nice tradition and experience for you both to hold on to.

Jeff & Patti

CL: Who were some of your favorite vendors?

J&P: The Club did all the food for us, including the cake and they did an amazing job. But, I have to say that my florist Greenworks, impressed me the most.  The flowers looked amazing in the main dining room.

Jeff & Patti

CL: Who designed your gown? Tell us a little about how you chose it!

J&P: Christos is the designer of my dress.  It was the third dress I tried on and nothing else after or before compared.  It just fit me perfectly and was exactly the look I wanted.  Classy, fitted and traditional.  It was a lovely ivory color with gorgeous alencon lace.  It was strapless and had an hour glass silhouette , with triple tier silk organza.  And the train was not too extravagant, but just enough to make it still look like a “wedding gown” vs. a formal dress.

Jeff & Patti

CL: Where did you honeymoon?

J&P: We went to Hawaii for ten nights to the islands of Lanai and Maui.  We stayed at the Four Seasons and Ritz, and they were both simply amazing.   It was our first time there and we simply loved it.

Jeff & Patti

CL: Hawaii is such a beautiful place – a perfect spot to honeymoon!

CL: Thank you both for sharing a part of your wedding day with us, and best wishes!

{Real Wedding} Kacey & Doug, Woodend Mansion

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Please welcome Kacey and Doug who were married on September 18th at the Woodend Mansion in a very green wedding!

Kacey & Doug's Wedding

CL: My favorite question is always my first! How did the two of you meet?

K&D: We met through a mutual friend in high school; however, we were both moving to opposite ends of the country at that point in time so we didn’t actually begin dating until 2006 (almost 6 years later!).

CL: Share some of your favorite details about your wedding day.

K&D: We really tried to make our wedding as unique (to us) as possible. Our main theme and color was Green so we tried to be as eco-friendly as we could! We created our entire menu around family recipes and had friends prepare all the food with local ingredients from Waverly Farmers Market. I made all the desserts and the wedding cake (which was covered with concert tickets that served as ribbon around each layer of the napoleon “cake”). Kacey’s dress was made from organic silk and her bridesmaids each chose their own little black dress that they could wear again and again. Kacey also gave her bridesmaids each a unique piece of jewelry from a local silver company. We used recycled glass for the centerpieces and worked with Floral Couture (a family friend) to choose all local flowers. We had our Aunt and Uncle play a short acoustic set during the cocktail hour for which Chris provided the speakers. The programs were printed on recycled paper as well as the CD favors. There is actually a lot more unique little details but this would get far too long…

CL: You both were so thoughtful and creative in finding ways to have a sustainable, personalized event. How did you choose your first dance song?

K&D: Over the years, I won Kacey’s heart with long distance mix CDs. Our fist dance song was a special track on one of those CDs.

CL: The mix CD! We are no stranger to those!

Kacey & Doug's Wedding

CL: Did you take dance lessons for your first dance?

K&D:  Yes! We took three lessons at Studio DNA in Pikesville.  It was great fun!!!

CL: So, which of you was the better dance class student?

K&D: I would say we were both equally horrible. To be honest, we nailed it on our wedding day and I have no idea how we did it!

CL: You guys did an excellent job! Did you dance all night? What was one of the best moments you remember on the dance floor?

K&D: Yes, we danced all night! There were so many great moments: Our grandparents danced, someone started a conga line, at one point there was a Thriller dance off, and even some soca music too. However, our favorite moment was when Chris played ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ by Oasis at the end. Everyone was hugging and swaying (cheesy, I know) but it was a great moment!

CL: Those are the best ones…

Kacey & Doug's Wedding

CL: Was your wedding ceremony held at Woodend?

K&D:  Our ceremony was held at Woodend; we chose the site because of its commitment to sustainability and environmental education. It was a great setting for our relaxed outdoor wedding and reception.

CL: Did you write your own vows?

K&D:  We did! They were genuine and from the heart! Our friends have since made shadow boxes for us memorializing several items including our original vow/cheat sheets.

Kacey & Doug's Wedding

CL: Who were some of your favorite vendors?

K&D:  We loved Chris Laich! He did a great job with our outdoor ceremony and then really got the party going when it was time to dance!

CL: Thank you! It was a lot of fun. Who designed Kacey’s gown?

K&D:  Maggie Sottero was the designer; however, Kacey had her dress changed to remove a tie up and replace it with buttons in the back (reminiscent of her mother’s dress).

CL: Where did you honeymoon?

K&D:  We headed off to the Greek Isles for two weeks; we aren’t big fans of cruises so we chose to backpack. The islands were perfect for us because they provided both the relaxation and the history that we desired. It was a great trip and we can’t wait to continue traveling together.

CL: What a wonderful honeymoon. It must have been hard to come back after that!

Thank you both for taking the time to answer our questions and share part of your day with us.  It was a pleasure working with you both!
