Cupcakes vs. Cake…the Debate Rages On!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Lately, at Chris Laich Music Services, we’ve been intrigued and are ready to enter the great debate: cupcakes or cake? We see a lot of both, and we’ve wondered…is one better than the other?

Cuteness and Style:

The cupcake wins, but it’s close! Cake (especially from one of our favorites, Fancy Cakes by Leslie) looks sweet and delicious. Once cut, it gains some mouth watering appeal and but loses a little in the looks department.

Cupcakes, like our favorites from Fancy Cakes by Leslie, don’t get cut and pack a lot of punch in a little package. There’s nothing like a cupcake perched in the center of a plate.

For a more formal wedding, a cake might be the only way to go, but you can have your cake and eat it too by having a smaller wedding cake to display and cupcakes at the ready in back!

Cost:

It’s a draw. Unless you DIY your cupcakes or decorate store-bought ones, the cost of cake and cupcakes is generally the same. Cupcakes, particularly when they are specially decorated for your wedding, take just as much time as a fabulous cake from another of our local favorites, Kendall’s Cakes.

Tradition:

We knew the answer to this one! It’s a little tricky make an event out of a cake cutting with a cupcake. Plus, cakes have been a part of weddings for hundreds of years. The modern, multi-tiered wedding cake was first introduced by Queen Victoria. Trendsetter that she was, she also introduced the notion of a white bridal gown. However, before Queen Victoria rocked the boat, all sorts of less grand concoctions were served at weddings throughout history.

So, in the end, the great Cupcake vs. Cake debate will rage on! There are wins for both sides, but ultimately it’s up to the bride and groom to choose what suits their style best!

Any vendor who is on site working at a wedding will tell you that one of the many exciting moments during the event is seeing the bride in her gown! Even after all these years of deejaying weddings and events in the DC area, it’s something I always look forward to.

Once something unusual, we’ve been spotting more brides changing into another dress for her reception. We’re all for a wardrobe change, especially when the intention is usually dance floor comfort!

What do you think of a wedding reception dress?

Planning Your Father Daughter Dance

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

There are few more emotional moments in the relationship of a father and daughter than the father-daughter dance.

By nature, the father-daughter dance can be little bit sentimental, but it’s meaning and poignancy are something almost everyone can relate to.  There often isn’t a dry eye in the house!  Since the dance is so personal, you don’t have to choose the same song that your guests have heard at every wedding.

Here are a few traditional and non-traditional father-daughter dance songs from some different genres.   Remember, regardless of the song length, we can certainly fade it out smoothly at any point in the song to create a seamless conclusion to the dance.

“Sunshine of my life” (Stevie Wonder)

“Daddy’s Little Girl” (Michael Buble, Al Martino)

“Daughters” (John Mayer)

“Father and Daughter” (Paul Simon)

“Have I Told You Lately” (Van Morrison)

“I Loved Her First” (Heartland)

“Isn’t She Lovely” (Stevie Wonder)

“Kind and Generous” (Natalie Merchant)

“My Girl” (The Temptations)

You’re My Best Friend

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

You and your fiance see yourselves rocking out on the dance floor. A crooning classic from the Rat Pack just isn’t your style. How about classic…rock?

No, I don’t mean air guitar (unless you feel it is called for).  I mean a sweet, upbeat number from one of the best bands ever, Queen.  Just listening to it brings a smile to my face, and before you know it, you’re swaying to the harmony.

It’s every bit a love song as anything sung by Sinatra. In fact, “You’re My Best Friend” was written by John Deacon, Queen’s bassist, to his wife, Veronica…to whom he is still married!

Belmont Country Club Set Up

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

Located in beautiful Ashburn, VA, Belmont Country Club is a gorgeous setting for a wedding! The club itself is actually a mansion that at one time was part of the land holdings of Lord Fairfax (now you know where Fairfax County got its name).

The Belmont Country Club house itself is really handsome. Nestled in the grounds of a manicured golf course, the scenery is really absolutely breathtaking! We were there just recently for a wedding, and while you’d think speakers would look really out of place in a historic home, our wireless Bose speakers fit right in.

I took a few shots of the room once it was all set up and added red arrows to show where we placed our speakers.

Map Out Your Wedding Day

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

A wedding in Washington, DC is exciting, and not just for the couple planning the event! Your guests will be thrilled to be invited, and many will make a vacatiWedding Mapperon out of your wedding weekend.

Imagine giving each guest a customized map (including directions) of the whens and wheres of your wedding?  With everyone using smart phones and toting laptops as they travel, having online access to “where to go” and “when to be there” is huge!

I came across Wedding Mapper and thought it was a really practical and cool tool and had to share it.

Users can create a free map that includes the locations of everything going on during their wedding. Couples can also map their favorite restaurants, shopping, attractions, and even where they were engaged. Using Wedding Mapper, you’ll be able share your city and your wedding day at the same time!

Hotel Monaco Set Up

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Designed by the same architect who created the Washington Monument, the former US General Post Office building is now the Hotel Monaco. It’s located in Penn Quarter, a really great, vibrant part of town and right by the Verizon Center, so your guests will be close to all the action.

The Hotel Monaco’s large ballroom has a lot of character. Once the Post Office’s Library, it has beautiful natural light, gorgeous pillars, and graceful archways. It’s a really special venue for a wedding.

When you enter the space, it can be hard to imagine where a DJ would set up, have the best sound, and keep the speakers as inconspicuous as possible. I snuck some pictures of our wireless Bose speakers set up in the Hotel Monaco ballroom at a recent event, and, as you can see, they blend perfectly with the space! These speakers create a perfectly balanced sound throughout dinner for the music and announcements.

No More Tired Dancing Feet

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

You’ve been dancing all night, your shoes discarded hours ago somewhere next to the dance floor or under your table.  As you dance, you ask yourself why you didn’t bring a pair of more comfortable shoes?

How about a basket of flip flops ready to use for your guests? This is the best idea we’ve seen in awhile!

Light It Up

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

After the ceremony site, the dance floor is where a lot of wedding day magic happens.  Up-lighting, monograms projected on the floor, and other special effects can add some drama to an already spectacular day.

Some event spaces come with the lighting and dramatic dance floors ready for use, while others have guidelines for what is allowed.  Be sure to ask your site manager your options or hire a wedding planner to handle the logistics for you!
