Unveiled 2012 – The Rehearsal Dinner

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Washingtonian Bride & Groom’s annual Unveiled event is definitely a must-go for area couples planning a wedding. This year, Bride & Groom added a really cool pre-party, The Rehearsal Dinner.

Hosted at Lincoln, one of DC’s choicest restaurants, The Rehearsal Dinner was an intimate affair. Ten engaged couples (chosen from the first 75 Unveiled ticket buyers) were invited to enjoy a fine meal with a few of the area’s finest wedding professionals. Needless to say, Chris Laich Music Services was both delighted and honored to be included!

We had a lot of fun getting to know everyone, and, of course, the food was excellent. Plus, we finally got to meet Bret Freedman from the Mandarin Oriental and Sherri Dalphonse, a senior writer at Washingtonian.

2011 Washington Bride & Groom Unveiled Event

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Honored with Washingtonian Bride & Groom’s “Top Vote Getter” in the DJ category for 2010, all of us at Chris Laich Music Services couldn’t wait for Unveiled 2011, Bride & Groom’s annual wedding showcase!

Without question, the event lived up to its reputation as the premier bridal event in DC. The Vera Wang show was just beautiful, and the area’s top wedding professionals did a fantastic job providing couples with advice and inspiration. Everything from the marvelous confections by Kendall’s Cakes (another “Top Vote Getter”) to the event design displayed by A. Dominick Events and Beehive Events was really spectacular.

We were thrilled with how the Chris Laich Music Services lounge turned out! Complete with cozy seating area and flat screen TV displaying our new montage video, it was the perfect setting to chat with couples who stopped by.

A huge thank you to the planning couples we met and to THE amazing wedding photojournalist Rodney Bailey for sharing his shots of the event with us!

For All Occassions Wedding Planning

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

Planning a wedding in the Washington, DC area (or any area, for that matter) is no easy task. Managing wedding vendors, timelines, and contracts, not to mention all the other everyday obligations…it can become overwhelming.

Which is why you hire a wonderful, organized, creative wedding planner like Myrna of For All Occasions Events. One of Wedding Wire’s 2010 Bride’s Choice winners, Myrna has been planning events since she lived in Miami. When she moved to Northern Virginia in 2001, she opened For All Occasions. Though her company began as a invitation business, her love of weddings and event planning soon inspired her to expand her business, and after becoming a certified planner at Weddings Beautiful Worldwide, she has been helping couples organize their weddings ever since.

For All Occasions

Myrna is also a newlywed herself…well, a renewlywed. Joined by friends and family, including her two grown boys, wonderful daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, Myrna recently re-married her husband, Paul, this June!

For All Occasions

We had a chance to catch up with Myrna and ask her a little about being a planner and her work with DC area couples.

If you could shout something from the rooftops about For All Occasions what would it be?

We take excellent care of all of our clients; whether their wedding is large or small, no matter what budget, or what type of planning or coordinating service they choose. This is all because Weddings are Our Passion!!!!!

What part of your piece of the wedding day or wedding planning process do you love most?

I enjoy most the times I can be creative and offer my clients design and decor tips and make their wedding speak about them…being involved in the planning process from the beginning is so much fun and allows the creative touches to flow!

If you could have any other job for a day, what would it be?

If I could have another position in the industry, I would love to sing in a band.

What are some trends you are seeing?

Clients are going for smaller weddings and working with smaller budgets, as well as doing more things themselves.

Is there an event or style of wedding you’re dying to plan?

I have planned a lot of weddings in my years, but I would love to be able to do more beach weddings, especially in the winter!!!!

We’d love to be at the beach more, too, Myrna! Thanks for your time and for being such a pleasure to work with!

Lansdowne Resort Set up

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

When you think resort, you probably think someplace tropical and exotic, right?  Did you know we have a resort right here in the Washington, DC area?

It’s got incredible golf courses, Virginia Wine Country, and a full service spa, and it is also the perfect place for a wedding.  The Lansdowne Resort is a fantastic, four diamond resort in Leesburg, Virginia, with wonderful grounds.  All of which means some really great spaces for a wedding, as well as accommodations for your guests.

Chris Laich Music Services was at the Lansdowne Resort recently for a wedding with an outdoor ceremony.  To make sure the guests could hear every word, instead of spreading bulky speakers all over such a lovely natural setting, we used a few of our inconspicuous wireless Bose speakers (see images below) to provide optimal sound!

Washington DC Wedding Photorgrapher Resource

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

We recently came across an interesting Washington, DC (and even nationwide) wedding photography resource – Best of Wedding Photography.

The site is an invitation-only photographer resource.  Of course, our first question was, who decides what photographers are invited? According to the Best of Wedding Photography site, they use a:

“Best of Wedding Photography employs a unique system of peer-review to ensure that membership standards remain uncommonly high. We look for photographers who are leaders in the field – both in terms of the quality and style of imagery they produce and their level of success and recognition by brides, fellow photographers, and others in the wedding industry.”

Potential Best of Wedding Photography wedding photographers are voted on by a panel, and those accessed are then listed on the Best of Wedding Photography site.

There are a lot of wedding vendor resource sites out there, and with everything couples pour into their wedding day, it’s worth exploring available credible information on the vendors they choose.  This is why we thought we’d pass Best of Wedding Photography on!

You can read more about their selection process and recommended Washington,DC wedding photographers here.

Weddings with Avalon Caterers

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

As deejays and music providers, Chris Laich Music Services is in the enviable position of managing an integral part of a wedding day while being able to observe the event from start to finish. This is not the case for caterers! From setting up hours before guests even arrive to working and cleaning up long after the event is over, caterers are on the front lines the whole time.

Having catered over 40,000 events, Avalon Caterers, owned by Anita Ellis and Horacio Zamora, is no stranger to wrangling all the moving parts of the day into a flawless event.  We’ve had the opportunity to work with Anita and her team at multiple weddings, and we are always impressed with her professionalism, customer service, and creativity.

We were able to catch Anita in between events to ask her a few questions about Avalon and what it’s like to own a catering company heralded by Washingtonian magazine as one of the best of the best.

We had assumed that Anita always wanted to be in catering, but it turns out it was something that chose her instead.“I fell backwards into the industry as an outgrowth of something else I was doing.  I was young, it seemed appealing as something to do for ‘awhile’ and I’m still here, 25 years later!”

She’s still here because catering and event planning became one of her passions.  Anita loves the “variety of experience.  Working with people during some of the most important moments of their lives. We cater weddings all the time, but we also cater graduations, funerals, job promotions, campaigns, and any other occasion you can imagine where food is an important part of the event. Maybe it’s odd to say, but I like funeral receptions very much because the focus of the day seems properly placed.  The gathering is all because of love for the person gone. There’s a lot of sweetness mixed with the sadness. And it’s especially great to hear people laughing at a funeral. The great stories about the loved one often make me wish I could have met them.”

Now, Anita can’t imagine doing anything else than being a part of Avalon Caterers.“I really like our piece of the day. Catering isn’t just about food to me.  The beauty of the presentation, the design of the room, the smoothness of the choreography of our staff makes me very proud. The pieces, when put together skillfully, make for a memorable day for the host.  They may not be able to put their fingers on exactly why it was so special but I know it’s the combination of many things that fall within our responsibilities and talents.  We’re very good at putting all the pieces together into a beautiful whole.”

Anita, Horacio, and Avalon Caterers’ commitment to ensuring all the cogs of an event fit beautifully together and perform perfectly is a point of pride. We can personally attest to the fact that Avalon Caterers will stop at nothing to deliver the best experience possible.“We catered the AHS Gala on the heels of Hurricane Isabel.  We dodged fallen trees, ran the kitchen without power or water, and cleaned up after hundreds of guests by the light from our trucks’ headlights.  We catered several weddings during this winter’s blizzard without skipping a beat and were trapped on a highway in New Jersey with 25 staff  for two days when coming home from another event in New York as the fury of the second blizzard kicked in on our commute home. There are times I feel more like we run the Red Cross than a catering company.  We just don’t like to let anyone down under any circumstances.”

In fact, Anita thrives on those kinds of challenges! When we asked her what type of event she’s dying to plan, she had this to say: “We’ve been lucky enough to cater for celebrities, royalty, and presidents. They’ve been exciting events to be a part of. What I’d like to tackle is an event on a grand scale with tens of thousands of guests with hundreds of moving parts.  You can’t call yourself a proper juggler if there’s only one ball in the air at a time.  I’d love to see the smooth blend of thousands of details merging all at once with Avalon at the helm.  Our largest event was for 70,000 guests but the details were fairly simple. What I mean is details that require the granddaddy of all spreadsheets…and it must be beautiful, too!!”

After seeing Anita and Avalon in action, we can attest to their attentiveness to not only every little detail but also to their clients.    From excellent cuisine to thoughtful details that elevate a wedding or event into a gracious, memorable affair, Anita, Horacio and their staff at Avalon Caterers are among the best in DC!

Laura Weatherly and her team at Engaging Affairs

Laura Weatherly and her team at Engaging Affairs

Mention wedding planning in Washington, DC and the first name that pops into mind is Engaging Affairs.  Founder Laura Weatherly has built a company and a team of experienced wedding planners whose personal connection, attention to detail, and ability to translate creative vision into reality has earned it Washingtonian Magazine’s coveted “Best Overall Wedding Planner” time and again.

Engaging Affairs also has an eye for trends.  One of the first things we asked when we caught Laura in between weddings was what she and Engaging Affairs have been seeing on the style horizon.

“We have been doing lots of same-sex weddings since DC legalized gay marriage and that is one trend we’re thrilled to see! Style-wise, couples are still looking to incorporate vintage and retro touches into their weddings: details from the 50s, 60s or even the 1800s! We did a fabulous 1940s-inspired wedding this year and had so much fun with it!”

Laura even dished about the kind of event she is dying to plan.

“We love when couples have fun with their weddings and step outside the box.  A couple of weeks ago, one of my couples had a rousing game of wedding toast bingo at their wedding.  I would love to do a carnival-themed wedding where the couple went all out!”

We bet what you didn’t know about Engaging Affairs is what an environmentally and community conscious company it is. Over the years, Laura has proactively been moving Engaging Affairs in a green direction, due to her own experience in becoming more eco-conscious.

“A few years back I became a vegetarian, focused on eating locally and avoiding factory-farmed and processed food.  We started an organic home garden, began composting, cut down waste massively, recycled everything, and eliminated as many plastic products as possible.”Laura’s personal commitment prompted her to urge Engaging Affair’s clients to source locally.“We started doing many more ‘100 mile events’ where nothing comes from more than 100 miles away.”  To do this, she and her team focused on “greening” every aspect of wedding planning.

“We cut down on the amount of paper products used in our weddings and used as much recycled paper as possible.  We used florists who incorporated non-floral (and reusable) elements into their work like river rocks, bamboo, and branches. We consolidate the use of transportation as much as possible, and we’ve even used pedicabs to move guests!  A DJ is a greener option than a band because it involves moving fewer people to the venue and less equipment! The green options are really great and couples don’t have to sacrifice quality or style to be green anymore. Almost all of our weddings are ‘green’ now just by being smarter with resources.  Sometimes even without the client making it one of their priorities.”

By making eco-friendly an everyday way of life at Engaging Affairs, Laura and her team are some of the best multitaskers in an industry full of juggling pros. They are making a difference for the environment and the community, and are helping their clients to celebrate one of the most memorable and important moments of their lives all at once!

National Museum of Women in the Arts Set Up

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

With a drop dead gorgeous central Mezzanine and several galleries to choose from, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in downtown DC is a spectacular place for a wedding! Not only that, but working with Kelly or Lori, the site managers there, makes the whole experience pleasure.

The Mezzanine, where wedding ceremonies and receptions are often held, has these amazing, sweeping staircases on either side. Those grand staircases lead to the galleries, where the cocktail portion of the evening is generally held.

In such an impressive space, the last thing you would want to do is mar it with poorly placed DJ equipment! Add to that equation those soaring ceilings and all that marble and making sure there is perfect, undistorted sound is not for the inexperienced.

Chris Laich Music Services has been to the National Museum of Women in the Arts many times over the years. Between our experience and the equipment we use (including wireless Bose speakers for unmatched quality of sound), we make sure your guests won’t cringe from the music or wish they could hear the vows exchanged!

Check out the pictures we snapped at a recent wedding we deejayed at the National Museum of Women in the Arts to see where we unobtrusively and effectively placed our equipment:

Wedding Stationery…ByHand

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Until I met Steve Bottorff of ByHand Invitations, our knowledge of wedding stationery was limited to what we got in the mail and learned through osmosis from wedding planners and our clients.

I knew choosing wedding stationery could be daunting and sometimes frustrating, especially when faced with binders full of pre-made invitations that look nothing like the gorgeous images torn out of Martha and Washingtonian Bride and Groom!

Imagine how amazing it would be to toss the binders and have a wedding stationery suite custom-designed by your own creative team with your unique wedding and interests in mind? Think that kind of bespoke stationery is only a dream? Think again!

Washington, DC’s own ByHand Invitations is a boutique wedding stationery design firm that specializes in creating one of a kind wedding invitations for each one of a kind couple they work with.

Owner Steve Bottorff’s experience in graphic design and the fortuitous request by a friend for Bat Mitzvah invitations led to the beginning of something wonderful. Before long, Steve was creating stationery for all kinds of special events, including weddings!

Inspired, Steve opened ByHand Invitations, a nod to when everything – notes, invitations, letters – was made and delivered by hand, as well as to the fact that every piece of stationery is crafted by hand and with love.

For about the price of a high-end invitation selected from a binder, Steve and his creative team will get to know you and how your envision your wedding stationery looking. Drawing inspiration from what they learn, they spend hours researching and developing just the right combination of elements for your custom wedding invitations.

Everything from typography, printing process, and design is considered. Letterpress, thermographic printing, debossing, engraving…no matter what a couple may dream up, Steve and his team at ByHand can make it happen! You’ll quickly discover that Steve and his team at By Hand Invitations not only have the talent and knowledge to devise the perfect stationery solution for every bride but also that customer services puts them at the next level.

Cupcakes vs. Cake…the Debate Rages On!

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Lately, at Chris Laich Music Services, we’ve been intrigued and are ready to enter the great debate: cupcakes or cake? We see a lot of both, and we’ve wondered…is one better than the other?

Cuteness and Style:

The cupcake wins, but it’s close! Cake (especially from one of our favorites, Fancy Cakes by Leslie) looks sweet and delicious. Once cut, it gains some mouth watering appeal and but loses a little in the looks department.

Cupcakes, like our favorites from Fancy Cakes by Leslie, don’t get cut and pack a lot of punch in a little package. There’s nothing like a cupcake perched in the center of a plate.

For a more formal wedding, a cake might be the only way to go, but you can have your cake and eat it too by having a smaller wedding cake to display and cupcakes at the ready in back!

Cost:

It’s a draw. Unless you DIY your cupcakes or decorate store-bought ones, the cost of cake and cupcakes is generally the same. Cupcakes, particularly when they are specially decorated for your wedding, take just as much time as a fabulous cake from another of our local favorites, Kendall’s Cakes.

Cakes by Kendall's Cakes

Tradition:

We knew the answer to this one! It’s a little tricky make an event out of a cake cutting with a cupcake. Plus, cakes have been a part of weddings for hundreds of years. The modern, multi-tiered wedding cake was first introduced by Queen Victoria. Trendsetter that she was, she also introduced the notion of a white bridal gown. However, before Queen Victoria rocked the boat, all sorts of less grand concoctions were served at weddings throughout history.

So, in the end, the great Cupcake vs. Cake debate will rage on! There are wins for both sides, but ultimately it’s up to the bride and groom to choose what suits their style best!
