What Did Jackie and JFK Dance To On Their Wedding day?

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

Jackie Kennedy is a style touchstone for many brides as they shop for their wedding gowns.

But have you ever wondered what song she and President John F. Kennedy chose for their first dance?

Performed by Meyer Davis and his orchestra, they danced to “I Married an Angel.”

We couldn’t find the version the Kennedys danced to anywhere, but this jazz interpretation by Nat Adderly is very romantic:

Barry White Did Country?

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

How do you think one of the most popular first dance songs would sound as a country music?

“You’re my First, My Last, My Everything” danced to by newly married bides and grooms all over was originally written by Peter Radcliffe around 1953, was intended to be a country song!*

It sat for 21 years un-recorded until 1974, when Barry White added it to his second album “Can’t Get Enough”. Of course, first, along with Peter Radcliffe and Tony Sepe he music, re-wrote the lyrics (keeping the music), then recorded and produced it as the disco influenced, romancing song we all know and love!

How Do I Choose My Wedding Day Music with Chris Laich Music Services?

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

Your wedding day is just that – all yours! At Chris Laich Music Services, we are committed to always keeping that in mind.

Each playlist for every wedding we do is custom-tailored for the couple and their one of a kind wedding day. If you had a request that is not in our 80,000 song repertoire, we will download as much as needed from iTunes before the event.

Music selection always starts with the bride and groom, and our process is geared toward making sure the music on their wedding day is exactly what they envision it to be. Whether they have a large list of must-plays or a large list of do-not-plays, or whatever; we will completely honor their lists.

We supply our clients with a song list that covers only about 400 songs, asking them to highlight what they’d like to be played, and encouraging them to write any additional songs they would like to hear.

Our cocktail/dinner playlists often include Frank, Tony, Dean, and Bobby, as well as Dinah, Etta, Ella, Billie, and Nina. Then there’s Van Morrison, Nat, Marvin, Ray, and James Taylor. Some newer music is also worked in, with tracks from artists like Ben Harper, David Gray, Sting, Dave Matthews, Regina Spektor, Coldplay, U2, Harry Connick, Michael Buble, and Eva Cassidy; but will certainly cater to your likes and dislikes.

By getting to know our clients and their style, when their wedding day arrives, our brides and grooms trust us to pull songs from their list, read the crowd, and play songs in an appropriate order from cocktails to dinner and dancing. With their feedback, we put together a perfect mix of new and old, a blend of eclectic yet recognizable, romantic, distinctive sounds that will always catch their guests’ ears!

You’re My Best Friend

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

You and your fiance see yourselves rocking out on the dance floor. A crooning classic from the Rat Pack just isn’t your style. How about classic…rock?

No, I don’t mean air guitar (unless you feel it is called for).  I mean a sweet, upbeat number from one of the best bands ever, Queen.  Just listening to it brings a smile to my face, and before you know it, you’re swaying to the harmony.

It’s every bit a love song as anything sung by Sinatra. In fact, “You’re My Best Friend” was written by John Deacon, Queen’s bassist, to his wife, Veronica…to whom he is still married!

Dance Classes in Bethesda

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

If you want to make like Fred and Ginger, unless you’re lucky enough have the skill and talent to move across the dance floor like pros, you’re going to need dance lessons.

The cool thing about dance classes is that you get an automatic date night and get to spend time together preparing for your wedding day. Dance classes are also lot of fun, and the added benefit is that all the moves you learn will be helpful every time you step on the dance floor long after your wedding day.  We’ve talked bout swing and lindy hop classes in DC before, but what about Bethesda?

Dance Bethesda

Dance Bethesda (301-951-3660) offers flexible wedding dance packages that include a helpful DVD of your lesson to take home and practice to.  They also offer ballroom, swing, tango, and waltz classes at $15 if you drop in, or you can also buy an 8 or 50 class card.

DuShore Dance Studio

DuShor Dance Studios (301-656-7434) also offers a wedding package with a la carte private and group class schedules couples can take advantage of.  Like Dance Bethesda, DuShor offers $15 to drop in one of their group classes, as well as private lesson rates.

Even if you don’t want to officially take a private lesson to formally prepare you, a group lesson is a great alternative to movie night for about the same price.  Not to mention it will give you a little extra confidence for your first foray on the dance floor as newlyweds!

Dance Floor Inspiration

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

You know you want to look good for your first dance as a couple on the dance floor. The problem is, when you try to picture your first foray as husband and wife, you draw a blank. Or maybe just the image of the two of you swaying in place is a recurring dream that you just can’t shake.

What you need is a little inspiration to get the creative juices flowing!

I’ve compiled a few images from some couples known to have rocked the dance floor on the silver screen. Before long, you’ll have a song picked out and maybe even have practiced a few steps together.

Real First Dance: Making Memories

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Jeff & Patti at the Metropolitan Club

Jeff and Patti were married in an elegant, intimate wedding at the Metropolitan Club in October.  For their first dance, they took one dance lesson and then decided to wing it! I would have never guessed…they moved across the dance floor in a world of their own.

Jeff & Patti at the Metropolitan Club

Jeff really loves country music, and the words of the song were so meaningful to both of them that they knew Keith Urban’s “Making Memories of Us” was the first song they wanted to dance to as husband and wife.

Wondering if Keith Urban and “Making Memories of Us” might be exactly what you want to float on the dance floor to? Below is an acoustic version.  Even if you’re not a country fan, it is one sweet, romantic song!

No More Tired Dancing Feet

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

You’ve been dancing all night, your shoes discarded hours ago somewhere next to the dance floor or under your table.  As you dance, you ask yourself why you didn’t bring a pair of more comfortable shoes?

How about a basket of flip flops ready to use for your guests? This is the best idea we’ve seen in awhile!

Real First Dance: Al Green’s Love and Happiness

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Courtney & Jeff at the Halcyon House

Courtney and Jeff were married at the Halcyon House in Washington, DC and wanted a more uptempo song that “suited their personalities better.”

Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” was a great choice since Al Green is one of Jeff and Courtney’s favorite artists, and they had a blast on the dance floor!

Classic First Dance Song: As Time Goes By

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

“As Time Goes By” is a timeless love song crooned by the iconic Frank Sinatra and made even more romantic by its use in one of the most romantic movies of all time, Casablanca.

Humphrey Bogart plays Rick Blaine opposite Ingrid Bergman’s Ilsa Lund as former lovers reunited…with complications.   “As Time Goes By” is the song that reminds them of their time together in Paris.

Filled with lines like:

“You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.”

“As Time Goes By” is a great first dance pick, and Casablanca is a must add to your Netflix queue!
